MEDIA RELEASE - SIGNING OF MEMORANDUM OF JUDICIAL COOPERATION WITH THE FEDERAL COURT OF MALAYSIA

1. On 6 March 2024, a Memorandum of Judicial Cooperation (MOJC) was signed between the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam and the Federal Court of Malaysia to strengthen communication, collaboration and cooperation on issues relating to dispute avoidance and resolution. 

2. The MOJC was signed by The Honourable Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong on behalf of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam and The Right Honourable Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat on behalf of the Federal Court of Malaysia. Present at the signing ceremony was The Honourable Justice Hayatul Akmal binti Abdul Aziz, High Court Judge of Kuala Lumpur, Tuan Zamri bin Bakar, Chief Registrar of the Federal Court of Malaysia and Deputy High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam, Puan Nur Ezira Mahadi. 

3. Prior to the signing of the MOJC, Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat together with the delegation from the Federal Court of Malaysia called on Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong. During the bilateral meeting, the Chief Justices held fruitful discussions on areas including court administration, judicial education and training, and developments on the use of technology and voice to text transcription in court proceedings.

The MOJC will formalise ties between the Judiciaries of Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia and it is planned that a working group will be established to develop a plan of action to chart the future direction of judicial cooperation in the coming years. The MOJC signifies the warm friendship between the Judiciaries of Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia and underscores the commitment to strengthen and expand the bilateral ties. 

5. This is the fourth memorandum signed between the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam and other jurisdictions, following the signing of a memorandum with the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China on 21 September 2004, the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong SAR on 4 May 2023 and the Supreme Court of Singapore on 18 July 2023.
