1. On Thursday 6 June 2024, the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam hosted a lecture on ‘Trying
Commercial Law Cases’ delivered by Judicial Commissioner of the Court of Appeal The Rt. Hon.
Sir Peter Gross.
2. At the lecture, Sir Peter Gross expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as a Judge
in Brunei and discussed the development of commercial law, highlighting the historical and
ongoing ties between Brunei and the UK with “the field of justice” as “one of the strongest
ties linking our two countries”.
3. Sir Peter Gross outlined the need for commercial law to facilitate commerce and spoke on the
establishment of the Commercial Court in London, key principles of English law in
international trade, case management, and contract interpretation. He concluded with
reflections on serving as a judge in Brunei and highlighted the country’s “strong common law
tradition” which offers “many opportunities for commercial and associated legal and judicial
development.”

4. In attendance at the lecture was The Hon. Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong
together with The Hon. Judicial Commissioner of the Court of Appeal Michael Victor Lunn, The
Hon. Judicial Commissioner Haji Abdullah Soefri bin POKSM DSP Haji Abidin, The Hon. Judicial
Commissioner Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Datu Juragan Laila Diraja Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri
Pahlawan Haji Kefli and Acting Chief Registrar Hajah Hazarena binti POKSJ DP Haji Hurairah.
5. The event brought together over 140 attendees which included members of the Judiciary,
Attorney General's Chambers, Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Finance and Economy,
Brunei Darussalam Arbitration Centre (BDAC), Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB)
and The Law Society of Brunei Darussalam.
