MEDIA RELEASE – BRUNEI AND SINGAPORE JUDICIARIES JOINTLY ORGANISE WEBINAR FOR YOUNG JUDICIAL OFFICERS

1. 32 participants took part in the inaugural Brunei-Singapore Webinar for young judicial officers. Held on Tuesday 24 September 2024, the webinar was jointly organised by the Brunei and Singapore Judiciaries, covering areas relevant for those at the state of their judicial careers. The webinar offers an opportunity for young judicial officers with less than seven years’ experience to discuss topics ranging from court room control and communication and decision making and judgment writing.

2. The idea for the joint webinar came about as a way for young judicial officers to meet and connect with one another following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in July 2023 between the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam and the Supreme Court of Singapore.

3. The webinar commenced with opening remarks made by The Hon. Justice Hj Abdullah Soefri bin POKSM DSP Hj Abidin of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam and The Hon. Justice S. Mohan of the Supreme Court of Singapore.

4. In his address, Justice Hj Abdullah Soefri said that “judicial officers at the beginning of their careers often face many of the same issues” and emphasized the importance of judicial training and capacity building and how they are essential to maintaining the efficiency of the courts. He expressed his hope that the joint webinar will develop into an annual platform for judicial education and exchange between Brunei and Singapore which will allow opportunities for young judicial officers to network and build working relationship with their counterparts.​

5. Justice Hj Abdullah Soefri said “the joint webinar is a testament to the strong bilateral ties between the Brunei and Singapore judiciaries” and acknowledged the hard work and efforts of the Brunei-Singapore working group members in making the webinar possible.

6. Closing remarks were made by Senior Registrar Hjh Noor Amalina binti DP Hj Alaihuddin where she said that the webinar provides a valuable platform for young judicial officers to connect, exchange ideas and learn from each other. In her address, she said that “judicial work can be demanding but having a community of like-minded individuals who face similar challenges, can be a great source of support.” She expressed her support for the joint webinar and hopes that it will continue for the years to come.
