Steven Chong together with the delegation from the Supreme
Court of Brunei Darussalam called on The Honourable President
of the Judicial Branch of the Republic of Peru Dr. Javier Arévalo
Vela. During the bilateral meeting, they held fruitful discussions
on common areas including judicial education and training, developments on the use of technology in court, and the use of
mediation by the courts.
4. The MOU will formalise ties between the Judiciaries of Brunei
Darussalam and Peru and underscores the commitment to
strengthen and expand bilateral ties. Brunei Darussalam and
Peru established diplomatic relations on 1 June 1990. Both
countries have sought to strengthen cooperation through forums
such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in which
Brunei Darussalam and Peru are members. In the context of
Brunei Darussalam and Peru’s active involvement in APEC, the
MOU will provide a platform for the two Judiciaries to share best
practices and experiences to better equip judges and judicial
officers with the skills and common understanding to handle and
resolve disputes, despite having different legal systems.
