JABATAN KEHAKIMAN NEGARA (JKN) / STATE JUDICIARY DEPARTMENT (SJD)
The State Judiciary Department was established on 1st May 2002, by command of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
The State Judiciary Department is placed under the Prime Minister’s Office as a full department, headed by a Director. The establishment of the State Judiciary Department took effect on 18 Safar 1423, corresponding to 1st May 2002, while the administrative transition of both Civil and Syariah Courts to this Department took effect on 20 Rabiulakhir 1423, corresponding to July 1, 2002.
The State Judiciary Department is responsible for administrative affairs, the management of support services, budget allocations, and the financial affairs of both the Shariah Courts and the Civil Courts.
With the establishment of the State Judiciary Department, the Civil Courts and Syariah Courts will continue to maintain their respective judicial procedures and principles as stipulated in the provided Acts and Regulations, except for matters relating to administration and finance, which are managed by the State Judiciary Department.
