PDJLD DSP Haji Kefli and comprising officers from the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam, the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), Universiti Islam Sultan
Sharif Ali (UNISSA), and representatives from the Law Society of Brunei Darussalam, attended the 15th ASEAN Law Association General Assembly, the 47th ALA Governing Council Meeting, and the ASEAN Law Conference 2026, themed “People. Planet. Partnership.”, held from 19 to 24 July 2026 at the InterContinental Bangkok, Thailand.
At the Opening Ceremony of the ALA General Assembly on 21 July 2026, the Chair of ALA Brunei Darussalam delivered the welcoming remarks on behalf of the
Brunei Darussalam delegation. In his remarks, he highlighted ALA Brunei’s collaboration over the past year on initiatives including the Crossroads Working
Group, the Standing Committee on Women in Law, and the Honorary Secretaries Meeting.
During the 47th ALA Governing Council Meeting, the Governing Council approved the establishment of nine new Standing Committees, pursuant to the recommendations of the Crossroads 2 Working Group’s Concept Paper on the future of ALA. The restructured Standing Committees — covering Business, Trade
and Investment Law; Legal Education and Capacity Building; Technology and Innovation; Alternative Dispute Resolution; Cross-Border Insolvency; Transnational Practice of Law; Access to Justice; Women in the Law; and the Future of ALA — are intended to sharpen ALA’s focus on the harmonisation of laws across ASEAN and to strengthen institutional continuity through clearer terms of reference, fixed-term appointments, and structured workplans.
As part of the ASEAN Law Conference 2026, Ms Hajah Norhijradini Binti Haji Saidi, Deputy Senior Counsel at the Attorney General’s Chambers, represented Brunei Darussalam as a speaker in Session 5: “Law & Environment – Adapting to Net Zero: ASEAN Responses to Emerging Carbon Regulatory Frameworks”, held on 22 July 2026. She joined fellow panelists from Indonesia and Thailand to discuss the region’s emerging carbon regulatory frameworks and legal responses to
climate-related developments.
ALA Brunei Darussalam on 22 July 2026 joined the ALA Member States in signing the ASEAN Law Association Women In Law Pledge, witnessed by Her Excellency
Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, the outgoing President of the ASEAN Law Association. The Pledge, developed by the Standing Committee for Women in Law
under the motto “Lead, Leverage, Liberate”, affirms the collective commitment of ALA’s Member States to affirm that gender equality strengthens justice and the rule of law, collectively act to empower women and advance equality across ASEAN and to pledge for a future where every woman in law has an equal voice,
opportunity, and place in shaping justice.
Brunei Darussalam also marked its first-ever participation in the ASEAN Moot Competition, fielding a team of fourth and fifth year students from the Sultan Haji
Hassanal Bolkiah Faculty of Law, UNISSA. The team’s participation marked a significant milestone in Brunei Darussalam’s engagement with the ASEAN legal
education community.
