Media Release - Chief Justice attends Pacific Judicial Conference 2025
The Honourable Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong, attended the Pacific Judicial Conference held from 9-12 February 2025 in Auckland, New Zealand.
The theme for the Pacific Judicial Conference 2025 was ‘Strengthening the Institution of the Judiciary’. The conference was hosted by the New Zealand Judiciary and covered topics including judicial independence and the rule of law, the future shape of courts, the use of technology, judicial diversity, judicial appointments, legal pluralism, and climate change litigation.
The conference was attended by Chief Justices, judges and judicial officers from the Judiciaries of Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cook Islands, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Pitcairn Islands, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, United Kingdom, United States and Vanuatu.
The welcome address and keynote speech was delivered by The Rt. Hon. Dame Helen Winkelmann GNZM, Chief Justice of New Zealand.
Also in attendance at the conference was the Acting Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hajah Hazarena binti POKSJ DP Haji Hurairah, together with another senior judicial officer from the Supreme Court.
