Media Release - Signing of Renewed Memorandum of Understanding with The Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China on Judicial Cooperation

On Thursday 6 February 2025, a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on judicial cooperation was signed between the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam and the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China to strengthen communication, collaboration and cooperation on issues relating to dispute avoidance and resolution. The renewed MOU is intended to update the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the two Supreme Courts on 21 September 2004.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al- Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the signing ceremony of the MoU. The MOU was signed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong and President of the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China Zhang Jun.

Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong joined His Majesty’s delegation for the state visit to China and attended the meeting with Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji; welcoming ceremony; meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping; the signing ceremony of memorandums of understanding; the wreath laying ceremony; and meeting with Premier of the People’s Republic of China Li Qiang.
